Some cleaning professionals have been vacuuming carpets for so long they think they were born knowing how to do it. Not so— vacuuming is a learned task and vital to proper cleaning. And there are always techniques to make vacuuming faster, safer, and more effective. To that point, here are 10 tips for efficient vacuuming when using an upright vacuum cleaner.

  1. Always inspect the area to be vacuumed first. For instance, if carpet is wet, the moisture can be vacuumed into the machine and potentially damage internal components. A quick inspection can prevent such damage from occurring.
  2. Pick up coins, paper clips, and large debris before vacuuming. Do not assume the machine can safely “digest” these larger items.
  3. Check the filter bag before each use, especially if the vacuum is used by other users. Change the bag when it is two-thirds full.
  4. Check the bottom of the vacuum cleaner. Ensure that connections and connectors are tight and remove any debris.
  5. Check the brush. If twine or debris is caught in the brush, use a comb or similar object to remove it.
  6. Put greater time and effort vacuuming heavily trafficked areas and less time in periphery areas. This strategy can reduce vacuuming time overall.
  7. Vacuum in a forward moving, overlapping direction.
  8. Do not vacuum stairs or steps by picking up the machine. Instead, use a wand and proper wand attachment.
  9. Change vacuuming directions from time to time, as this helps remove soils from fibers.
  10. When done vacuuming, do not pull on the cord to unplug the machine. Reach for the plug to disconnect its base from the outlet.

Small spaces = less cleaning.  It’s one of the best benefits of living in a tiny apartment. The only problem is that living small also means less storage space, so you want to streamline your cleaning supplies into a kit that can be easily stowed in a kitchen cabinet or closet.

Here’s our basic checklist for everything you need to keep your tiny apartment clean.

  1. Broom, Dustpan, and Mop: These are the basic tools of floor cleaning. Use a small interlocking broom and dustpan or a microfiber mop – takes up less space in small closets.
  2. Upright Vacuum: A smaller upright vacuum reaches into corners and under furniture.  Most have an attached wand kit for reaching high spaces.  Canister vacuums can be more compact with as much vacuum power – but usually don’t have the added value of the beater bar.
  3. Bucket: A mop bucket can double as a catch-all for cleaning supplies. Any modestly sized bucket with a handle will do.
  4. All-Purpose Liquid Cleaner:  Use these for cleaning with a bucket and sponge or mop.
  5. Window Cleaner Spray: Window cleaners like Windex(r) are great for quick cleanups on counters and kitchen appliances.
  6. Wood Cleaner: Many people recommend cleaning wood floors or furniture with white vinegar or just a dry cloth, but we’ve always preferred to use a cleaner made specifically for wood.
  7. A Couple of Sponges: Keep separate sponges on hand: one for dishes and one for surface cleaning. If you really want to be compact, try using pop-up sponges, which can be stored flat. When you’re ready to use one, just add water and it expands.
  8. Scrub Brush: These are useful for scouring pots and pans in the kitchen. We usually only go through one at a time. Any more seems unnecessary.
  9. Dish Soap: If you really want to make your sink area feel clean and organized, try using squeeze bottles to store your dish soap. As you refill the squeeze bottle, you can dilute the dish soap with water, making it last longer.
  10. Microfiber Cloths, Rags, or Paper Towels: We hang a rag bag near the pantry and keep it full of old cloths for cleaning. Others recommend microfiber cloths, while wall-mounted paper towels can be a convenient space saver.

Always Shovel or Plow Snow Before Applying Salt

Remember last winter when the northeast, the mid-Atlantic and even the Southeast was blanketed with snow and ice brought by unpredictable and historic blizzards?  This year, building mangers are advised to start planning their winter maintenance parking lots and sidewalks ahead of time – keeping them free of ice and snow. Surfaces should look clean, and provide clean surfaces to walk on.

The National Safety Council reports that slip and fall accidents cost businesses an estimated $780 billion each year in negligence claims.

Tips:

Deicers – Chemical deicers do the melting but do not provide traction. Add sand to your maintenance list.

Salt and Sand

  • It’s hard to push a shopping cart through salt slush and sand accumulation in parking lots. When lots and sidewalks are dry, sweep up the sand.
  • Handicap parking sports are often treated with extra salt and sand. These can actually make transportation more difficult.
  • You may be able to use less salt/sand levels in high traffic areas.  Traffic tends to help mix and melt.
  • Pay attention to were salts are stored.  Avoid letting snow melt run through salt storage.
  • Always plow or shovel before applying salt. Results are faster with lower overall costs.
  • Sidewalks often get too much salt. Use a drop spreader instead of a rotary spreader. Better control and less salt on the grass next to the sidewalk.
  • Many slip and fall accidents occur within 10 ft. of the curb.  Pay special attention here.
  • Too much salt or deicer can be tracked into the building , damaging the concrete, polished floors and metal surfaces. Mop and rinse floors to control melted snow and slush.
  • Clean floor mats regularly. Move mats before mopping.
